Castlewellan Community Allotments

Castlewellan’s new allotment is just beginning their journey to provide a space for the local community to grow, share and learn. There has been significant interest from the wider community in the project, with have upwards of 20 volunteers. The aim of the project is to promote diversity and inclusivity through growing produce, and empowering the community in a level of sustainability and environmental awareness.

Mentor: County Down Rural Community Network

Castlewellan Community Allotments was created to provide a shared growing space where people of all backgrounds can cultivate their own food, develop skills, and connect with their community. By transforming disused land into a vibrant, productive space, we offer opportunities for outdoor activity, social interaction, and improved well-being.

Through the Elevate Project, we have strengthened partnerships with groups such as The Men’s Shed, The Dolmens Climate Action Group, Annesborough Women’s Group, Castlewellan Regeneration, and Ballymote Allotments in Downpatrick. The mentoring provided through CDRCN was invaluable in helping us manage budgets, develop partnerships, and plan effectively. Funding allowed us to clear and fence the space, establish raised beds, and host workshops on planting native hedges and creating a Sally Garden—a willow circle that serves as a symbol of inclusion and a space for reflection.

Our efforts engaged local families, children, and volunteers, particularly through the planting of hedgerows, an orchard, and wild garlic. Initial planting events involved children from the adjacent housing estate, fostering a sense of ownership and environmental awareness. The Men’s Shed played a crucial role in constructing our storage shed, while the Dolmens group supported us in planting events. The local Irish language group have even proposed bilingual signage to enhance inclusivity.

Beyond growing food, the allotment has addressed social isolation and accessibility, particularly for older individuals and those with disabilities. Regular meetings, social gatherings, and an active social media presence helped us engage a wider audience and encourage feedback.

The transformation of this once-neglected space has been empowering, turning a site that previously attracted anti-social behaviour into a thriving community hub. Our opening in May will celebrate the hard work of our volunteers and the connections we have built.

Elevate has provided us with focus, mentorship, and the tools to reduce health inequalities, ensuring our allotment remains a welcoming, sustainable, and community-driven space. Our motto, "Together We Will Grow," has truly come to life, reinforcing the power of collective action.
