The primary aim of this project was to facilitate accessibility to health services for the Deaf Community, addressing critical issues in health, mental health, and equality of services. The project focused on individuals aged 30 to 70+, ensuring that their unique needs were met through a person-centred approach.
As the project evolved, it became clear that while there were overarching concerns shared by the community and individual needs varied. Recognising this, the project shifted towards empowerment and self-responsibility. A key highlight was the concept of "community supporting community," which not only showcased the ongoing efforts within the Deaf Community but also strengthened collaborations between various organisations. A significant breakthrough was the engagement of organisations that had never previously worked with the Deaf Community. Through interactions and training, these organisations began to reassess their own working practices, leading to more inclusive approaches. The Deaf Community played a central role in shaping the project, with information being disseminated through accessible channels such as WhatsApp messaging and video content.
One of the most impactful outcomes was addressing Heart Health. CPR training and defibrillator awareness were identified as crucial needs. To ensure accessibility, training was tailored to accommodate Sign Language users, for whom English is not their first language. Similarly, mental health support was prioritised, with yoga sessions specifically designed for Deaf participants. The success of these sessions was evident in the gratitude expressed by participants who had never had the opportunity to engage in such activities before.
While careful planning was essential, a trial-and-error approach proved invaluable in fine-tuning delivery methods. The growth in skills, knowledge, and confidence among individuals and collaborating organisations cannot be overstated. Many initially apprehensive organisations emerged from the project with a newfound commitment to inclusivity. One organisation, in particular, has since integrated feedback from the Deaf Community into its standard practices.
The overarching theme of "Community supporting community" was evident throughout the project. The Deaf Community identified their needs, and, through collaboration, solutions were developed and implemented in a manner that was both positive and accessible. The relationships forged between the Deaf Community and external organisations demonstrated the power of collaboration at its best.
This initiative shone a light on the systemic barriers faced by the Deaf Community while emphasising the responsibility of the Hearing World to foster inclusivity. As a result of this project, the Deaf Community has been empowered to advocate for their needs with increased confidence. Future plans include developing community health champions from within the Deaf Community, securing funding for a public defibrillator, and expanding certified training programmes which is being explored to build on the success of the initial sessions.
This project has been a powerful reminder of the impact of listening, adapting, and empowering. It has galvanised the Deaf Community and reinforced the importance of accessibility, collaboration, and self-advocacy in health and wellbeing.
“Thank you for the opportunity to be a participant in the Elevate Project. The opportunity to deliver this project with the support from yourselves has been truly transformational for the Deaf Community and the Community Groups and individuals that we have worked alongside.”
