The Elevate Project has made a great difference in the lives of older adults residing in the Clogher Valley, providing a structured 20-week programme that directly supported 32 men and women aged 66 and over. In a time where social isolation and the cost-of-living crisis present significant challenges, this programme has become an important lifeline, encouraging social connections and promoting health and well-being amongst older individuals.
From the outset, the programme aimed to create a welcoming space for older adults to come together. With participants actively engaging, we successfully met our target attendance, and more importantly, sustained their involvement throughout. What became evident was this was more than just an exercise programme —it became a social hub, a place where friendships blossomed, and individuals found a sense of belonging. Participants now look forward to these gatherings as an integral part of their weekly routine, reducing the loneliness often experienced by older adults.
To ensure that the programme met the real needs and interests of the participants, we introduced feedback forms and open discussions. This approach provided valuable insights into what the group truly wanted from the programme. One recurring theme that emerged was the lack of accessible opportunities for older individuals to proactively maintain their health. Many participants had a general understanding of the importance of staying active but lacked the structured support or knowledge to implement this in their daily lives. The Elevate Project bridged this gap by providing expert-led sessions, empowering participants with the tools and confidence to engage in physical activity beyond the programme itself.
Through the programme, participants gained not only knowledge but also the confidence to engage in physical activity independently. They learned that simple movements and exercises could be seamlessly integrated into their daily routines, allowing them to maintain their health at home. Encouraged by their shared enthusiasm for staying active, the participants took the initiative to form a walking club. Meeting on an additional day each week, they now explore local forest walks and community pathways together, further strengthening their social bonds and commitment to an active lifestyle.
The Elevate Project has highlighted a crucial gap in community resources for older adults. While numerous opportunities exist for younger individuals to engage in health and fitness activities, older adults often find themselves overlooked. This programme has demonstrated the demand and necessity for tailored programmes that cater specifically to their needs.Health and fitness in the community are now perceived as accessible to all, regardless of age. The impact of this programme has gone beyond its original scope, creating a ripple effect that has heightened awareness of the importance of maintaining health no matter what age you are. Given the overwhelmingly positive response, there is a clear and pressing need to continue and expand such programmes.
“The Elevate Project is not just a programme—it is a movement towards greater inclusion, better health, and stronger communities for our older adults. The connections made, the confidence built, and the proactive steps taken by participants are testaments to its lasting impact. With continued support, we can ensure that older individuals in Clogher Valley remain active, engaged, and valued members of their community.”
