Our project aimed to tackle health inequalities among young people and families from ethnic minority migrant backgrounds in Belfast. It was a resounding success, empowering participants and fostering greater community integration. Through innovative and youth-led initiatives, we increased awareness of health issues, while building skills, confidence, and solidarity within diverse communities. We set out to address health inequalities in the Belfast areas of Bloomfield, Falls, Waterworks, and Cliftonville, specifically targeting young people and their families from migrant backgrounds. Our goal was to create a platform for young people to design and lead workshops on health, community integration, and social issues.
Impact Story
The core of the project involved five-week "Youth-Led Learning & Integration Workshops," where young participants planned and facilitated workshops for families in the community. These workshops focused on topics like racism awareness, integration, healthy eating, and building social connections. Each week, young people collaborated with professionals to design interactive sessions, bringing together families from different backgrounds. Key activities included:
- Racism Awareness – Facilitating discussions to promote understanding of racism.
- Lived Experience Sessions – Sharing unique perspectives from both local and migrant families.
- English Learning & Interaction – Casual language learning through conversation.
- Cooking Classes – Teaching affordable, healthy Northern Irish dishes.
- Healthy Eating & Emotional Eating – Educating participants on nutrition and emotional eating.
- Youth Panel Discussion – Young people reflecting on the project and sharing future community engagement ideas.
Throughout the project, participants also received training in public speaking, workshop facilitation, and event planning, building their leadership skills and confidence.
Impact on Participants
The project had a profound impact on its participants:
- Increased Awareness of Health Inequalities: Over 70% of young people gained a deeper understanding of health disparities, empowering them to advocate for more equitable health resources.
- Skill Development: Participants developed skills in public speaking, event management, and facilitation. Two previously shy participants took on leadership roles, showing the transformative power of youth-led projects.
- Community Integration: Workshops fostered greater interaction between families from different cultural backgrounds. Shared experiences helped build empathy and stronger, more inclusive relationships.
- Increased Confidence and Advocacy: Young people led workshops for older community members, encouraging them to speak out on important issues, furthering youth-led advocacy.
Unforeseen Benefits
The project also brought unexpected benefits, such as strengthened community connections. Participants formed lasting bonds and invited others to join, expanding the network of young people committed to community development. The project also had a ripple effect, with participants using public speaking skills in school events, benefiting the wider community.
Sustainability and Future Work
Looking ahead, we aim to continue addressing health inequalities and promoting community integration through future initiatives. The resources developed in this project will guide upcoming workshops, and we will continue to foster partnerships with other organizations to expand our impact.
This project has had a transformative effect on the lives of young people and families in Belfast, creating a model for future community-driven initiatives that will support a healthier, more inclusive community for years to come.
"The Elevate Community Mentoring and Grants programme has empowered our participants to improve their health and well-being, gain confidence and new skills. Community connections have been strengthened, and our organisation’s capacity to tackle health inequalities has improved."
