Our project involved the development and implementation of two primary components: "Autism Active" and "Sensory Haven,". We organised a series of inclusive sports programmes specifically for individuals with autism, providing opportunities for physical activity, skill development, and social interaction. We engaged around 100 individuals with autism offering regular sessions once or twice a week. The activities were adapted to cater to different abilities and preferences. In parallel, we established a sensory-friendly space known as the "Sensory Haven." This space served as a calming and inclusive environment for individuals with autism during our programmes and events. Equipped with sensory-friendly lighting, tactile elements, and comfortable seating, it accommodated around 20 individuals at a time and was available for use during Autism Active sessions and other community events.
Our project has created a profound positive impact on our community, particularly individuals with autism, by addressing their health inequalities. The key outcomes closely aligned with our project's activities and identified needs. The project significantly improved access to tailored physical activities and community engagement opportunities, catering to the unique needs of individuals with sensory sensitivities. Boosted physical and mental well-being, increased self-esteem, reduced isolation, and fostered a sense of belonging and empowerment among participants. Raised community awareness of autism's challenges, increasing understanding of sensory sensitivities and social needs to create a more empathetic and inclusive environment. Built stronger community connections, promoting positive relationships and camaraderie among participants, families, and the broader community.
