The Resurgam Trust's "Naturally Together" project aimed to develop environmental spaces for gardening, eco-friendly crafts, and nature trails at Old Warren Estate, Hillhall Estate, and Hilden Mill School. These community hubs focused on addressing health inequalities and fostering community cohesion through the Men's and Hens Shed initiative. Key issues addressed included tackling food poverty and food waste through the Community Fridge, combating poor mental health and isolation via the Social Café and activities such as foraged arts and crafts, and supporting social spaces through planting - the community is looking forward to the spring blooms!
The project involved various groups, including the Lisnagarvey Friendship and Support Group, Lisnagarvey Beekeepers Association, Resurgam Healthy Living Centre Women’s Groups, Community Fridge Volunteers, Social Café Volunteers, and Dig Deep Volunteer Gardeners. The aim of improving environmental spaces exceeded expectations in terms of engaging participants. There was a shift from primarily environmental activities to social activities, with the 3D Social Café becoming a community hub for hosting events with little expense due to food recycling.
Participants gained confidence through becoming part of a social group and meeting others within and outside the community. Volunteers developed skills that helped them gain confidence and become organisers of community events. The local council environmental officers and other HSC services, such as Safe and Well, supported the events, enhancing community wellbeing. The community benefited from hosting events on a budget through recycling and reducing food waste by using the Community Fridge.
The wider community benefited from the infrastructure created to deliver activities in three areas of Lisburn City and residents have been able to access and connect with services because of better opportunities for community engagement, for example, the Jobs and Benefits Officer attending the social café.
Participants expressed their appreciation for the welcoming environment and the positive impact on their lives, with quotes such as "I'm really excited about coming back to the group, see you all Thursday" and "Lovely morning and thank you all for being so welcoming."
The "Naturally Together" project has made a significant difference in the community, improving wellbeing, reducing inequalities, and fostering a healthier, more connected community. The success of this project highlights the importance of collective action and community engagement in addressing social and environmental issues.
