The Living Rooms Project is dedicated to creating an inclusive space where people from all backgrounds can come together. Our mission is to reduce social isolation, strengthen community connections, and improve mental well-being. Through the Elevate Project, we have provided opportunities for individuals—particularly women recovering from poor mental health—to learn new skills, build confidence, and form meaningful friendships.
Many of our participants face financial hardship and struggle with a sense of belonging, making access to a welcoming space vital. Our workshops have had a profound impact. A watercolour card-making session with women from a Women’s Aid refuge gave participants a creative outlet, boosting their self-esteem. One woman shared, “I actually went out and bought a paint set!” Similarly, our sewing machine sessions helped develop practical skills while fostering friendships. A facilitator reflected, “I haven’t laughed as much in years.” These sessions highlighted how shared activities promote emotional well-being and resilience.
Much of our outreach happens through word of mouth and collaboration with groups such as Al-Anon, Mental Health Recovery groups, and voluntary organisations. Additionally, our new relationship with Tools for Solidarity will provide future opportunities for skills development and resource-sharing.
The Elevate project has also helped us to recognise the importance and value in empowering volunteers from within the groups that are affiliated with us e.g. the Community Choir, the Boardgamers group and the Contact Centre. Inspired by our sewing facilitator, we are exploring a Repair & Mend event to encourage sustainability and community engagement.
Going forward, we remain dedicated to empowering volunteers, strengthening community ties, and ensuring everyone feels valued. The Elevate Project has helped us recognise that small, community-led initiatives can create lasting change, and we are excited to build on this foundation.
